iBSL Level 3 Award in Deafblind Communication

Sign for Thoughts is delighted to be running the iBSL Level 3 Award in Deafblind Communication Course.

Having seen that there was a huge gap for more Deafblind awareness, Sign for Thoughts introduced the iBSL Level 1 qualification a couple of years ago, and has since launched Level 2 and Level 3 after such high demand for the course.
Our delivery has been an amazing success, we have now trained over 70 students. We have run training courses in the South East, Derby, and Ireland, as well as CPD training for CSWs/ Interpreters and Lipspeakers.
We are now on our 3rd cohort of delivering iBSL Level 2 Deafblind communication and the standard of students is so high, we are excited to now offer the iBSL Level 3 in Deafblind communication.
A Level 3 course will enable development in functional Deafblind Communication to a level where there is ease in the working relationship between a Deafblind person and the communicator requiring the ability to exchange, present and understand information, ideas, advice and opinions at a normal speed.

Qualification Structure
Learners must hold certificates in Level 3 BSL (or first Language equivalence) and both Level 1 & Level 2 Deafblind Communication qualifications to enrol on the Level 3 Deafblind Communication course.
(There needs to be a reasonable time in between Level 2 and Level 3 to allow learners more experience in real life situations prior to doing the Level 3 DB Communication.)
The Total Qualification Time is 100 hours, with a Guided Learning element of 32.5 hours.
The qualification is divided into three units as follows:
IBSL3DBCUN: Understand Varied Signed Language in a range of work (DB) contexts (F/505/9455)
IBSL3DBCSN : Sign using varied language in a range of work (DB)contexts (J/505/9456)
IBSL3DBCC : Interact with Deafblind people (L/505/9457)
To attain the Level 3 Deafblind Communication qualification, it is a requirement to pass 7 assessments. These assessments consist of conversations using Deafblind manual, Visual Frame, and Hands On; an essay on professional development; Deafblind conventions; an exam to assess knowledge and experience working with Deafblind people; and one way relay with a Deafblind person.
This qualification has been developed in accordance with the National Language Standards at Level 3 (2010 and (for one unit) the National Occupational Standards for Intercultural Working (2008).
Qualification Objectives
At the end of the qualification, learners will be able to:
- Understand and present information, ideas and opinions in a range of work-related and social contexts using a variety of Deafblind communication methods delivered at normal speed and in normally used social and work contexts.
- Extract specific details and grasp overall meanings form a range of short passages in Deafblind communication delivered at normal speeds , using a variety of Deafblind communication methods.
- Maintain business relationships and manage/follow uncomplicated negotiations relating to issues/concerns in your area of work delivered in Deafblind communication at normal speed and in normally used social and work registers.
- Take part in discussions relating to varied accounts, reports and instructions delivered in Deafblind communication.
- Develop interactive communication skills with Deafblind people who have different cultural experiences and perspectives to your own and understand/appreciate why these differences exist.
- Evaluate and reflect on performance and promote personal professional development

Course Costs
Course fees are £600 (VAT included).
Plus Assessment fees of £135
Total: £735
Payment of fees by instalments may be agreed on arrangement.
Additional Cost
An external tutor will assess and mark work, totalling 4-6 hours. This fee is approximately £35 per hour, paid directly to the assessor.
